in 1999 following a less than successful trip to a local store,
Zappos is now the web's most popular footwear store. While bricks
and mortar stores are limited by the size of their stock rooms,

Their online store provides access to millions of pairs of shoes,

At local
footwear stores, shoppers can often choose from only a handful of
styles that the store buyer has chosen from each brand - and pray
that their size is in stock. Zappos decided that by offering customers
a complete selection of styles from leading brands, with a wide
selection of sizes, they could would make the experience of shopping
for mens shoes and womens shoes online a more pleasurable one.
With footwear
catalog sales in excess of $2 billion annually in the United States
it was clear that shoppers are happy to receive their footwear in
the mail. In 1999, Zappos was born and it is now amongst the most
successful of any 'pure-play' footwear e-tailer.

Ciara has admitted that she spends $11,000 (£7,240) every month on shoes.
The singer told Pride that she owns over 1,000 pairs of designer footwear and
is obsessed with buying new ones every time she shops. "When I go shopping,
my most extravagant purchases are normally going to be shoes," she explained.
"I just love shoes and go for what's hot. I like everything from Louboutin
and Dr Martens to Versace and Fendi." She added: "A person should
always be able to afford extravagant shoes... It depends on the items, but,
on an average shopping trip I probably spend a minimum of $1,200 (£790).
It's not that bad! On average, I will spend about $11,000 (£7,240) a month
[on shoes]." Ciara recently announced that she will release her new album
Basic Instinct on August 24.
You only need to look at the standard of most men's shoes walking down a British high street. Scuffed, and that's only the leather ones. Many are soft, shapeless things. The type my father would call brothel creepers.
But you would be wrong. Because, in fact, the British male still has standards and cares passionately about the shine on his brogues. That is the clear message from the accounts of Grangers, whose sales increased by 32pc last year, after a 25pc increase the year before. And in that time profits have increased ten-fold.
Grangers is the parent company of Cherry Blossom. It is less well known than its main rival, Kiwi, but it is a small, historic, and increasingly successful private company. And it is, importantly, the only company that still makes its shoe polish in Britain – on a trading estate near Derby, which it shares with the headquarters of Slimming World.
